cdoassinterview mit peter nilsson
is there a special meaning behind your bandname "cdoass"?
no, not really. it looks good and we won't get hassled by some other band across the sea with the same name.
your album is produced by christian falk, could you please describe why you chose him. in the past he worked with notorius b.i.g. and different house acts. was christian falk your first candidate for the job?
when the recording for the album was scheduled times we're hectic. we had just gotten home from the tour with the hives and on such short notice many producers we're busy recording other artists. playground (our label in scandinavia) had been in contact with christian and when he heard the material he said he would love to work with us. everything felt great when we got together for the first time so there was no reason looking further.
could you please describe how christian falk influenced the sound on your album? how was the cooperation?
this was our first time with a producer. earlier we had recorded and produced everything ourselves, in just a day or two on stuff we found in the studio, sometimes naked. (the "speak to me" (single version) for instace) you could say we we're pretty unexperienced and that christian worked in a very different way from what we were used to. he could work on notes and minor adjustments for days and we never heard the difference. the personal chemistry worked very well, he's really a great person. the nursing kind you know, who always sees to that others feel well. empathi. often we would just sit around and talk, eat fruit and listen to records. we did have a minor clash at the end of the mixing. we had been working for more than two months straight, living in a very small apartment faraway from home, with no money at all, and christian working both day and night at times - i guess it was inevitable. musically, we worked a whole lot more with percussion than before. that was christians idea. more rhythmic i guess.
do you know the "wizards of ooze" from belgium? i think your album sounds a little bit like them. especially the funny, but amazing way you combine guitars and synthie and other sounds.
no, never. but i guess we'll have to check them out now.
you were on tour with "the hives". was it your first time in germany and what are your first thoughts when you think about germany?
let's face it, we were pretty spoiled. going on our first european tour, and never playing for less than 1000 people..he he. we loved germany, we got the impression that the people are very musically aware and really enjoys music and concerts.
touring is a hard job. could you describe a typical day when you are tour?
drive for many, long hours. usually arrive late. do a short soundcheck. drop some stuff off at the hotel. have a beer or two and just hang around until the show, usually pretty tired. get on stage and the adrenealine gets you going at once. after the show you feel 100 times better so you drink lots and stay up too late. repeat the next day. on rare occations when we've got the time we usually walk around in the cities, visiting museums, recordhunting, swimming.
do you know a topical german band?
there's lots of good music from germany. in the past you've got stuff like can, neu!, kraftwerk, vampires of dartmoore, the whole ndw-scene with palais schaumburg, die doraus & die marinas and die radierer. we all like einstürzende neubauten. and theres tons of great electronic labels and artists. einmusik, ada..almost everything on kompakt. oh, manfred krug is great too! deutsch-demokratische rare grooves!
imagine, someone stole all your instruments, what would you do?
first of all we wouldn't be suprised, we've got bad luck running through our veins. then we'd probably cry.
how important is coffee for you? could you imagine playing in a band or being on tour without coffee?
all the others in the band are real caffeinejunkies, and i'm getting started too since we got a coffeemachine in our studio. after a week on tour there's coffeestains and coffeemugs everywhere in the van.
to which unkown swedish band / bands should the german musicfan listen to?
here's a few. hell on wheels, jens lekman, silverbullit, suburban kids with biblical names, testbild!, paddington dc, seamonster1, the radio dept., differnet and slagsmålsklubben, they moved to berlin last year.
